Procedure
Preparation:
1) Fill 3/4 of the water basin with water.
2) Spread 50 mL of crude oil over the water in the water basin.
Containing and Absorbing:
3) Pour 25 mL of dish soap around the rim of the container to contain the oil.
4) Now that the dish soap has mixed with the oil, scoop as many oil as possible with one plastic spoon. Put the oil scooped out in to a 250 mL beaker, try not to pour as much water as possible.
5) After step four, there shouldn't be a lot of crude oil left in the water basin. Now drop 10 cotton balls at a time down at where crude oil is left the most.
6) Pick up the cotton balls when they have absorbed enough oil and become useless.
7) Put the cotton balls in to the 100 mL cup.
8) Use a sponge to absorb the rest of the oil left in the water basin.
9) Squeeze the oil that the sponge absorbs and contains in to the 250 mL cup.
Cleaning up the mess!
10) We have now finished containing and absorbing the crude oil in the water basin. Pour the water in the water basin and the crude oil in the 250 mL beaker in to the sink.
11) Throw away the useless cotton balls, the 100 mL cup, and the plastic spoon.
12) Carefully wash the water basin and the beaker, with detail.
